Let’s get scootin’
How it works
Watch our how-to video!
Step 1: Download and set up the HFX e-Scooters app
Enable camera access and allow location services for the app.
Use a credit card or bank account configured for online transactions.
Step 2: Locate an available e-scooter
Open the app and look at the map of Halifax.
When you pan around the map, you will see the locations of available e-scooters.
Click on an e-scooter to get more information about that scooter.
If you do not see any e-scooters on the map it means e-scooters are not available, or are not deployed for use at that time.
Step 3: Learn how to drive an e-scooter
Safety, laws and tips to know before you begin your ride.
Step 4: Make your way to an e-scooter and start your rental!
Using the map of Halifax on the app, go to the location of an e-scooter. E-scooters are rented on a first-come-first-served basis. When you arrive open the HFX e-Scooters app and tap the ‘scan QR code’ button.
On each e-scooter’s handlebar is a QR code. Scan the QR code to see the e-scooter’s remaining battery life and decide if you want to rent that unit.
Do not rent e-scooters with less than 20% battery life.
To rent the e-scooter, accept the terms and follow the prompts to unlock. The display on the handle bar will turn on and you will hear a loud activation sound.
Step 5: Stay within the geo-fence
Using the map on the app, stay within the green operational area. Going outside the green area will result in your e-scooter sounding an alarm and disabling the electric power. You will need to manually push the e-scooter back into the geo-fence area.
Step 6: Finishing your ride
When you are done with your e-scooter, you can leave it at any of our designated parking locations. You can find the blue parking zones on the map in the app.
When you are inside a designated parking zone, click “end trip” on the app. You will see your rental cost, and your card will be charged automatically.
Park your e-scooter “out-of-the-way”. Do not block sidewalks, or entrances to businesses or residences. Find a spot that will keep the e-scooter out of risk of damage and doesn’t interfere with members of the public.
E-scooters not returned to a designated parking zone will automatically charge a $5.00 fine to the total cost of your rental.
The prepayment will be applied to your rental, and any overpayment is refunded right away. Note it may take a number of days for some bank to process the refund.
